1. Petra–the High Place.
Petra was overlooked by a ‘high place’ where sacrifices took place. A long climb led to the mountaintop, with views in all directions. The high place itself is marked by these pillars, and the land has been carved and flattened.
2. Panias–the cave.
Panias’ cave was an old holy place, which was further developed as a shrine to Pan in the Hellenistic period. The cave is now flanked by the remains of temples to, among others, Augustus. The place is a major source of the Jordan; its beauty and its water and its cave proclaim its holiness.
